LPGA Volvik Championship Field Is Set
Five of the top six golfers in the world to compete in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR–Ariya Jutanugarn has been confirmed to defend her title as many of the best women golfers in the world, including five of the top six, travel to Ann Arbor for the second annual LPGA Volvik Championship.
The Thailand phenom won the inaugural title last year but will need to replicate that effort at the Travis Pointe Country Club next week if she is going to make it two in a row. But she has the skills to do just that.
Last year, Jutanugarn led the Tour with five wins and recorded 11 additional top-10 finishes.
She became only the second player to win the Rolex Player of the Year, Race to the CME Globe and the LPGA Official Money Title ($2,550,947) in the same season, joining Lydia Ko (2015). She was also the second- youngest Rolex Player of the Year in the 50-year history of the award (Ko, 2015).
At the 2016 LPGA Volvik Championship, Jutanugarn carded a final round 67 to win by five-strokes at 15-under par, five strokes clear of her nearest competitor, Christina Kim. It was Jutanugarn’s third consecutive win on the LPGA Tour and the first to accomplish the feat since Inbee Park in 2013.
Five of six and 17 of 25 of the top ranked players on tour will compete for the $1.3 million purse. Jutanugarn is currently ranked number three.
The top five players in the LPGA Volvik Champion are So Yeon Ryu, Jutanugarn, In Gee Chun. Lexi Thompson and Shanshan Feng.
Lydia Ko is the only player ranked in top five that is skipping this event.
Notables such as Anna Nordqvist, Brooke Henderson, Stacy Lewis, Jessica Corda, Chella Choi, Michelle Wie, Morgan Pressel, Paula Creamer, Christina Kim along with veterans Laura Davies and Juli Inkster will also be in the field.
“We are pleased with the quality of the field,” Tournament Director Keith Karbo said. “There is a strong list of current top notch LPGA names along with some of the greats of the game that will tee it up.”
Travis Pointe Country Club will host practice days on Monday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 23. The A123 Systems Pro-Am will take place Wednesday, May 24 with the first of the four-day, 72-hole competition starting on Thursday, May 25 ending Sunday, May 28.
